How Fast Should Your Website Load

Image representing Google as depicted in Crunc...
vWhenever  you are planning to get yourself a new website you are bound to spend  reasonable time debating on the issue of how fast you want your website to  load. Although the answer will initially seem an obvious as soon as possible or  instantly, it never turns out that way.
Nobody  wants their website to be slow, but there are reasons why they do it, rather  why they are forced to do it. The time taken for a homepage to render is  directly proportional to how heavy it is. If your homepage is loaded with  images (and especially flash) it will take much longer time to load than a  website which is mainly text based. For example, Google's website loads in an  instant because it is only text with small images and on the other hand, Amazon's  website takes a fair while to show up due to heavy images all over the page.
Unfortunately,  you and I are not the Google's of the world who don't need anything on their  homepage besides a search box and a small graphic and still be a famous site. We  need to add ingredients to spice up things. There should be good images on the  main banner, a few flash elements here & there, you also like some  interesting mouse moveovers and boom! Before you know it you have an overloaded  page that loads as leisurely.

It  the above was the decking up part, what follows is the reverse cycle. You are  like a child who has filled up his plate with too much food in excitement and  is now realizing that it will be difficult to digest. So, you start the reverse  count and get down to eliminating the unnecessary elements from the page to  make it lighter. This is not an easy part but an important one.
The  trick or the solution is in finding the right balance that suits you the  best. I gave you the example of Google  and Amazon above. What you need to realize is that their websites work for them  but Amazon can't have Google kind of look and vice versa. Similarly, you need  to know what will work for you and accept the loading accordingly. If your  website demands a 3 - 4 second loading then so be it and if you can do with 1  sec load, nothing like it. The ideal loading time for your website is  determined by your website itself and not by any rules.
